NAGANO, Japan - Future prospect Joji Kato upstaged world record holder Hiroyasu Shimizu to take the first race of the 500 meters on the opening day of the single-distance speed skating championships in Nagano on Nov. 1. Kato carved up M-Wave ice arena to cross the line in 35.76 seconds to take the lead heading into second leg on Nov. 2.
